Girls´Day at Minitüb: Between laboratory and mechanical engineering
This Thursday, enterprises with technical departments, universities, and research centers are invited to organize an open day for girls. Minitüb GmbH advertised with the slogan “Between laboratory and mechanical engineering: Animal reproduction behind the scenes” for numerous participations.
With Alina and Petra, a biology lab technician and a mathematician from the departments Product Management and Technical Engineering, two female trainers led the girls through the exciting day and showed them that science and technology are not purely male domains.
11 young girls from various schools in Landshut discovered new talents in two workshops: On the one hand, technical skills were in demand when soldering electronic cubes. On the other hand, practical biology lessons were offered in the form of experiments on computer-controlled cell analysis, in which they were able to practice using a microscope and pipette. The biological material to be examined consisted of stallion and bull semen samples whose properties were analyzed using a program developed by Minitüb. The experiment to freeze disposable gloves and dandelions using liquid nitrogen caused amazement.
During the final tour of the Minitüb company premises in Tiefenbach, all the participants were able to gain an insight into the company and its professional offerings. And if some of the girls are now actually thinking about starting an apprenticeship in a technical field, the event has come a little closer to achieving its goal.
“Girls’Day – Future Prospects for Girls” is a nationwide German career-orientation project for girls. On that day, female students aged 10 years and older learn about professions and subjects of study with a proportion of less than 40% being women. The goal is to influence the vocational choices of girls in a very positive way.
