Peter J. Hansen awarded 2026 Simmet Prize for Assisted Reproduction
The International Congress on Animal Reproduction (ICAR), in collaboration with Minitube International, is proud to announce that Dr. Peter J. Hansen, Distinguished Professor and L.E. “Red” Larson Professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Florida, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Simmet Prize for Assisted Reproduction.
The Simmet Prize, the most prestigious award in the field of animal reproduction, honors scientists who have made outstanding contributions to both basic and applied research in assisted reproduction. Established in memory of Dr. Ludwig Simmet, a pioneer in artificial insemination and founder of Minitube, the prize is awarded every four years at the ICAR meeting.
Dr. Hansen is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research in reproductive physiology, heath stress biology, and developmental programming in livestock. His work has significantly advanced our understanding of the maternal-embryonic dialogue, particularly in cattle, and has led to transformative innovations in improving fertility and reproductive efficiency under challenging environmental conditions.
Among his most impactful contributions are:
Dr. Hansen has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles, holds an h-index of 98, and has mentored more than 75 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who now serve in leading academic and industry positions worldwide. His leadership roles include presidencies of the American Society for Reproductive Immunology, the International Embryo Technology Society, the Society for the Study of Reproduction and ICAR.

The 2026 Simmet Prize will be formally handed over to Dr. Hansen during the 20th ICAR, to be held June 22–26, 2026, in Obihiro, Japan.

- Development of embryo transfer technologies to mitigate the detrimental effects of heat stress on female fertility in cattle.
- Discovery and application of thermotolerance genes, including the SLICK mutation in the prolactin receptor gene, which has been successfully introgressed into Holstein cattle to improve heat resistance and reproductive performance.
- Pioneering the concept of “embryokines”, maternally derived molecules that regulate embryonic development and influence postnatal phenotype. His work with colony stimulating factor 2 (CSF2) has opened new avenues for enhancing embryo viability and fertility in both livestock and humans.
