20 years of canine reproduction seminars at Minitube USA
Minitube USA proudly marked the 20th anniversary of its Canine Semen Preservation, Artificial Insemination (AI), and Breeding Management seminars, as well as its Canine Transcervical Insemination (TCI): The ART of Transcervical Insemination seminars, held twice a year. These seminars brought together veterinarians and veterinary technicians from across the country for an engaging combination of lectures and hands-on training at the Minitube USA facility.
We were once again honored to welcome Dr. Bruce Christensen of Kokopelli Veterinary Care as our lead instructor. A former professor at Iowa State and UC Davis, Dr. Christensen is a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT) and a member of the Society for Theriogenology (SFT), bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the program.
Day One began with informative lectures, followed by a practical session focused on semen collection using the three-funnel system. Participants evaluated semen concentration, motility, and morphology using Minitube’s advanced AndroScope and SpermVision SAR® CASA systems. Demonstrations of various staining techniques were also included. The day concluded with the preparation of semen for chilled preservation using CaniPlus Chill LT.
Day Two continued with lectures on breeding management and semen cryopreservation, transitioning into hands-on training. Attendees practiced freezing semen in 0.5 ml straws using the CaniPlus Freeze 1-Step and freezing unit. Post-thaw motility was assessed with the CASA systems, followed by an in-depth session on progesterone monitoring. Practical training in artificial insemination included the use of MAVIC AI catheters and Minitube’s advanced TCI systems.
Day Three was dedicated entirely to the ART of TCI. Participants engaged in intensive hands-on training utilizing the FlexiVision camera, TCI shunt system, FlexiLock endoscopes, TCI catheters, and a traditional ureterorenoscope. Initial practice runs were conducted on "Bertha", our canine training model, before attendees advanced to live procedures. Each participant successfully catheterized the cervix, gaining confidence and practical expertise.
We are proud to continue supporting veterinary professionals dedicated to theriogenology by providing them with the latest knowledge and techniques to enhance their reproductive services. Here's to two decades of learning and innovation – and to many more ahead.
